Cloning someone's voice without explicit permission is a legal problem in a growing number of jurisdictions and a reputational one everywhere — including a guest's voice to fix a line they did not say. If a synthetic voice appears in an episode, disclose it. AI-generated music is generally licensable for commercial use, but terms differ by tool and by plan, so check before an episode with sponsors goes out. And treat published transcripts as published: a transcription error in a quotation is quotable, and it is now the searchable version of what your guest said.
How to pick AI tools for podcasting
Buy the editor first. Transcript-based editing is the one purchase that changes the production time of every future episode, and for most independent shows Descript alone replaces the reason you would have hired a producer. Everything else on this page is an improvement at the margin.
Fix problems as early in the chain as you can. Live noise suppression during recording beats cleanup afterwards, and cleanup beats trying to salvage a mix. A $10 tool at the recording stage removes work that a much better tool downstream can only partly undo.
Then decide whether you are publishing or promoting, because it changes what you need. Publishing needs transcription, show notes and cover art — nearly all of it cheap or free. Promoting needs clips, video and scheduling, which is where the spend goes. Shows that plateau usually have the first half sorted and none of the second.
